Red clover thrives well on a wide range of soils except very light, acidic or waterlogged soil. It has a deep rooted system which makes it drought tolerant. Red clover is an important component of clover/grass mixtures for one or two years conservation leys. Red clover is widely cultivated in most countries with a temperate climate and it tolerates low temperatures during winter. The tetraploid varieties are more vigorous and leafy in growth.
