Red Clover

(Trifoilium pratense)

Red clover is an important component in 2-3 year clover-grass fields. The species tolerates less frequent grazing and it is therefore best suited for cutting. With its long taproot, red clover is very drought-tolerant, and thrives on a large number of soils (but not very light or waterlogged soils). Red clover utilises aerial nitrogen.

DLF-TRIFOLIUM is developing both diploid and tetraploid varieties. Compared with diploids, the tetraploid red clovers are stronger and more productive.

Breeding is focused on:

  • increasing the yield
  • ensuring that the varieties thrive under a range of different climates with different types of stress
  • ensuring resistance to such diseases as fusarium and sclerotinia (Sclerotinia trifoliorum).
