Fodder beet Breeding

(Beta vulgaris var. crassa)

Fodder beets are arguably the most stable and highest yielding crops for temperate areas. Both root and leaves can be used. The plant is a slow starter, and effective combating of weeds is required for a successful crop. Fodder beets are used for winter feed or grazed in strips in the field. Almost 70% of the dry matter is sugar, so fodder beets are a very energy-rich and easily digestible feed.

We develop varieties with:

  • very high yield
  • beets with minimal soil adherence
  • good resistance to bolters so the crop can be sown early
  • resistance to disease
  • tolerance to the herbicide Roundup, variety Simplex, which greatly simplifies growing
