iSeed®, the nutrient seed coating for grasses, has been successfully tested in independent field trials in many European countries. In forage, the yield potential of new high yielding forage varieties can be realised more efficiently with iSeed®. First results indicate a yield increase of 5% in the first year.
iSeed® contains 20% nitrogen in the coating. As the seed weight increases by 100%, the end product contains 10% N and 2% P in total. Depending on the sowing rate, considerable amounts of fertiliser can be applied through iSeed®. From a normal seeding rate of 3 kg grass seed/100 m2 in turf = 6 kg iSeed/100 m2. This means about 60 kg N/ha!

In turf, iSeed® shows higher numbers of seedlings as well as faster germination and establishment, resulting in a denser sward containing fewer weeds. This means a sports field that can be played on earlier. In the UK the STRI concluded after field trials in 2006: “The iSeed treatment significantly affected establishment and growth, improving the rate of both.”
Additional benefits of iSeed® for both turf and forage are the combined application of seeds and fertilisers, which saves time and money. And finally, the fast and slow release fertiliser ensure a more even and constant grass growth during several weeks.

HorseMax – Unique Mixtures for Horses
There are several million horses around the world – all of them need feed from grass and a place to exercise. DLF-TRIFOLIUM offers horse paddock mixtures for a wide range of areas and has already gained a lot of experience in this particular segment. We have now put all this experience into a new brand, HorseMax, which in one word says that it is the best mixture for horses.

Success of Overseeding System in Agricultural Grassland
The trial results show outstanding improvement in grassland performance following a comprehensive three year replicated overseeding trial at DLF-TRIFOLIUM’s research and development centre in Gloucestershire, UK.
The trials were sown three years ago to a high output base mixture containing Solid and Citeliac Hybrid Ryegrass with Premium and Calibra intermediate perennial ryegrass. This mixture has performed extremely well over the three years, but where it has been annually overseeded using the various specially designed ForageMax mixtures for Cutting, Grazing and Dual Purpose use, the improvements have significantly exceeded all expectations. Big differences in Nitrogen response by turf and forage grasses
|
By the same amount of applied Nitrogen, those varieties developed for forage production have a growth almost 60 % higher than seen by varieties designed for turf. This is the result of an aimed plant breeding towards – on one hand – forage varieties capable of turning nitrogen into high dry matter production, and – on the other hand – turf varieties growing slowly but dense.
These greenhouse trials at DLF-TRIFOLIUM have furthermore shown, that there also between varieties of same type (turf or forage) are great differences in their ability to utilise Nitrogen. This knowledge is now used for selecting varieties with the best possible Nitrogen use efficiency, meaning high forage production per kg applied N for forage grasses and the most beautiful lawn with the lowest N input for turf varieties. Both are for the benefit of economy as well as the environment.

Yield increase 50% higher in grasses than in maize
- grass breeding moves fast
Breeding progress has been 50-60% faster in grasses than in maize. Breeders of grasses have made great progress over the last 10 years. Variety trials carried out every year by the National Farmers Association in Denmark proves this. In average, the tested varieties have had an increase of 300 feed units per year or 3,000 feed units in total during the testing period 1995-2004. During the same period, the varieties of silage maize in trials have had a yield increase around 190 feed units per year or 1,900 over ten years.
This is a very good reason why to look carefully for the varieties of grasses with the best results - breeding is moving fast, creating new and better possibilities every year.

Fodder beets can now be harvested and stored as efficiently as maize |
|
|
In most places, fodder beets have a higher yield per hectare than maize, but they are not used so much any more because of the labour involved in harvesting and feeding. This problem can now be overcome by a newly developed beet harvester. |
|
The new machine harvests, cleans and cuts root and top of the fodder beets in one working procedure. The beets are then ready to be transported and ensiled together with maize. The machine, which at the moment is being tested in Denmark, is developed by the Danish machine factory Tim-Thyregod A/S in cooperation with a local contractor and DLF-TRIFOLIUM.

Several lawns in Holland’s most famous Park, The Vondelpark, has been resowed with Microclover mixtures.
Innoseeds advised the contractor in charge of the maintenance and the local authorities to sow the Microclover lawn mixture "Match Microclover" because of several advantages. "First of all we chose a Microclover mixture because we want a green lawn all year round, but also because it gives fewer problems with fungi diseases and weed. Microclover also has a big advantage in an environmental aspect because less fertiliser is used", says Mr Menno van the Bos, who is in charge of the maintenance of The Vondelpark.

Easy way for repairing drought damage in grassland
After the very hot summer, repair of grassland is needed in many regions. The drought damage has in some cases been added to previous winter damage. The result is now that poor yielding grassland is being invaded by weeds.
The use of a wire tine harrow combined with overseeding of new, large seeded, high yielding species ensures significantly improved grasslands.
Take a look at the video and see our recommendations for quick and cheap repair.

ESA (European Seed Association) has produced what is probably the most up-to-date comparison available for natural versus artificial turf for sports and leisure applications. The report presents in clear, factual detail the reasons why experts believe natural turf to be the best long-term solution for the industry. |
|
The evidence is clear - natural turf grass is better for the environment, healthier and safer for the players, the most cost-effective alternative to install and maintain, and the majority of football players and even spectators prefer it. The ESA report also shows that dedicated research and development of grass seed breeders has ensured a healthy future for natural turf. Natural grass solutions that can tackle pitch problems such as shade, air circulation and persistency in almost every situation, however extreme the conditions, are now available.

New Trial Site in Kentucky
The DLF-Trifolium staff has moved to Kentucky and established a trial site in the area known as “the inner bluegrass” - an area with rolling green hillsides and the home of some of the finest thoroughbred horse farms in the country. The first scores are made, and this coming spring, as the new foals are taking their first bite of grass, we will be harvesting and measuring the yield of our first trial. Read more click here

Breeding of Dark-Green Turf Varieties
Dark-green turf varieties have often shown benefits under heat-stress conditions.
Older, dark-green varieties are lacking density and fineness of leaves compared to medium-green, European material.
Breeding efforts by DLF-TRIFOLIUM have created new varieties and breeding material combining quality with stress tolerance.

New Products for New Zealand and Australia
DLF-SEEDS has established several forage trials of new varieties and new breeding material in New Zealand and Australia. The first harvest with measurement of Winter growth is taking place right now. Species tested are Annual and Italian ryegrass, Hybrid and Perennial ryegrass, Festuloliums, Tall fescues, Cocksfoot and White clover.
The harvest takes place with our Haldrup machinery in a very accurate way. The first results are most promising, proving that our breeding is able to make varieties suitable for this part of the world also.
Record Number of new Varieties Launched Again
Last year DLF-TRIFOLIUM was able to launch no fewer than 15 brand new varieties – the hi
ghest number ever. These included a range of dark green turf perennials. These varieties will of course be available in considerable quantities this year. On top of this, we are repeating the success this year with another 15 new varieties for which seed is now available. We are fortunate to have all these new varieties, which makes it possible for us, together with our customers, to renew the state of the art in grasses and the benefits thereof.

Increased Nitrogen use Efficiency in Grassses
A new research collaboration between DLF-TRIFOLIUM and KVL (The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University) has been established to ensure the development of grass varieties, which matches still increasing nitrogen use constraints. Plant nutrition has been the research scope for years at KVL and with recent discoveries, the two partners now seek to implement the results into DLF-TRIFOLIUM's grass varieties.

Seed Yield Trials Optimize Competitiveness
A high seed yield is a quality criteria of paramount importance when producing new grass
and clover seeds at DLF-TRIFOLIUM. Thousands of trial plots of Red fescue, Perennial ryegrass, Smooth-stalked meadow grass, Hybrid ryegrass, White clover and Cocksfoot have now been harvested in , and preliminary results show that the standard variety seed yields correspond to the yield obtained in practice. The trials have thus provided valuable information about the seed production potential of new, future varieties allowing DLF-TRIFOLIUM to make the right choice in terms of future seed production.
In connection with the seed yield trials various treatments have been tried out on the crops in view of optimizing the seed yield.
